Following the official opening of the 2026 Asian Judo Championships in Ordos, the event has now successfully entered competition phase, with the first day of contests and finals delivering exciting performances across multiple weight categories.
The opening ceremony, held at the Ordos Sports Development Centre Gymnasium, brought together 288 athletes and coaches from 21 countries and regions, alongside 77 officials, referees, and distinguished guests. Delegations from across Asia paraded into the arena, marking a vibrant start to the Championships.
The ceremony featured a dynamic light show followed by the cultural performance “Cheerful Ordos,” setting an energetic tone for the event. Flag bearers carried the flags of the International Judo Federation, Judo Union of Asia, Chinese Judo Association, and the Championships. On behalf of all competitors, Chinese judoka Buhe Bilige delivered the athletes’ oath.
In his remarks at the opening, JUA President Obaid Z. Al-Anzi highlighted the significance of 2026 as a milestone year, noting that the Championships are being held in the same year as the Asian Games. He reaffirmed the importance of friendship, discipline, and mutual respect as the foundation of the sport and expressed confidence in the event’s role in further elevating judo standards across Asia and beyond.
Competition began immediately following the ceremony, with athletes demonstrating high-level technique, tactical awareness, and determination on the tatami. After a series of closely contested bouts, judoka from Mongolia, Bahrain, and Tajikistan each secured gold medals on the opening day, while the host nation China claimed three bronze medals.
The Asian Judo Championships, organised by the Judo Union of Asia since 1966, continue to serve as the continent’s premier judo competition and a key platform for sporting exchange and development.
The Championships will run through 19 April, featuring men’s and women’s individual events as well as the mixed team competition. Comprehensive event operations—including accommodation, transport, medical services, anti-doping measures, and volunteer support—have been carefully implemented to ensure the smooth delivery of the tournament.
